Style Icon: Dress Like Jenny Shimizu

Model Jenny Shimizu became a household name when Calvin Klein featured her in his infamous 1990s androgynous ad campaigns.

Today, androgyny is all the rage on the runway, but Shimizu was one of the first dykes to become internationally known in her industry. “I’m Japanese, 5’7″, a dyke, tattooed, have little hair, and I don’t wear feminine clothes,” she stated, “no one like me had paved the way.” Her sex symbol status continued to rocket when she was rumored to have romantic ties to Madonna and had a confirmed relationship with Angelina Jolie. It takes a stylish dapperQ to turn heads like that!

Allow Jenny Shimizu to take you on a tour of her closet. Here, she discusses her current fashion, fighting with rage when her parents tried to get her in a dress for church, and feeling beautiful for the first time after seeing herself in an ad.

Shimizu’s style could be described as “minimal.” That doesn’t mean that it’s boring. Quite the opposite. Calvin Klein states, “Minimalism is not about abandoning pattern or print. I see minimalism to be a philosophy that involves an overall sense of balance, knowing when to take away, subtract. It’s an indulgence in a superbly executed cut, quiet plays of color tones and clean strong shapes.”

In the above video, Shimizu wears/gives a shout out to: J-Crew (blue denim work shirt); Levi’s (jean jacket); Converse; Adidas (Y-3 sneakers); Alexander Wang (sweatpants); Ebay (vintage Mickey Mouse t-shirts); and Rodarte (sweatshirt).

Here, Shimizu is wearing a Rag & Bone leather jacket, vintage Mickey Mouse t-shirt, J Brand jeans, and Paul Smith wing tips.

And, never to be caught off her game, a photographer catches Shimizu rocking some seriously amazing street style. For a similar look, try: Alexander Wang bag; Rag & Bone boots; Ray Ban Wayfarer; J Brand jeans; ASOS stripe top; and Poison Lovers tee.
