Daughter Inspires Mom to Launch Suit Company for Young Girls

Michele Yulo’s 10-year-old daughter, Gabriela, has a similar fashion aesthetic to the character Alison in the Tony Award winning musical Fun Home. Like Alison, Gabriela prefers traditionally “masculine” clothing; Gabriela developed a love for ties – especially bow ties – at an early age, and she requests to wear tuxedos to her violin recitals.  Frustrated by the lack of suit and gender-equal clothing options available to her daughter, Michele was inspired to launch Suit Her, a new entrepreneurial effort to create a unique, ready-to-wear line of suits for girls aged five to twelve. The Suit Her Kickstarter launched this week and, if funding is successful, the brand will offer three different looks: The General She (casual), The Classic She (semi-formal), and The She-She (formal).

Michele stated, “Gabi goes to her violin recitals, dances, weddings — but trying to find something for her to wear, even a fun pantsuit, is not easy. The girls who don’t want to wear dresses [when they have to dress up] have no options” especially considering that the suits she has had to purchase never quite fit right: “broader shoulders, longer arms, boxy pants, extra material in the crotch.”
