Janelle Monáe ‘W Magazine’ Cover and Shoot Directed by Jordan Peele

After watching (and then re-watching, and then re-re-watching…) Janelle Monáe’s latest video that is a gift from the queer gods, I sorta fell into a JM rabbit hole for hours on Sunday night.

After scouring the internet for all things JM related, I stumbled across W Magazine‘s recent cover shoot showcasing her in some impeccable dapper style. The re-imagined modern-day Hitchcock shoot, titled “Noir Town,” was directed by Jordan Peele and is part of a larger W Magazine photo series featuring directors Peele, Greta Gerwig and Luca Guadagnino bringing film to fashion.

Peele told the publication, “I didn’t want the Hitchcock heroine. I wanted the Hitchcock hero. That way, we can reclaim this movie that we never got to see. The fear of gender and race robs us of beautiful pieces of film.”

Select images from the shoot below. You can also find the full piece with additional photos, quotes, and outfit descriptions on W Magazine here.
