#Amandaforking: Gender Rules Prevent Albuquerque Teen from Running for Homecoming King

Mark Garcia, Principal at West Mesa High School located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is enforcing the school’s homecoming court rules dictating that, according to local TV station KOB, “girls by birth are queens, and boys by birth are kings.” This rule is preventing student Amanda Cordova from realizing her dream of running for homecoming court as a king because of the assigned gender on her birth certificate. Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) confirmed that homecoming court policies are made on a school by school basis, and not at the city-wide level.

Amanda Cordova stated, “I’ve watched Disney movies and …I’ve always seen myself as the prince, and never the queen.” She went on to say, “I think it’s wrong to deny someone to be something they want to be.”
