President Obama Presents Ellen DeGeneres with Presidential Medal of Freedom

On Tuesday, Ellen DeGeneres was one of 21 artists, athletes, activists awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Both Ellen and Obama choked up during the presentation, with POTUS reminding the audience of Ellen’s courage to come out over 20 years ago.

Of course, Ellen provided us with comic relief, announcing on Twitter that she forgot her ID and was almost not allowed into the White House for the event.

Ellen was the first actress to play an openly gay television character on her hit show Ellen in the 90s. The show was subsequently canceled after she came out as gay herself (not just her TV character) in the infamous EllenThe Puppy” episode.

Ellen is a reminder for us all to keep fighting, even when the chips are down.

  • In the eight years since he was elected to office, President Obama has not only become one of the most highly regarded politicians globally, but also the best-dressed American politician in a generation. Sure he’s not managed to eclipse the innate style of JFK or truly broken out of the restrictive navy and dark grey suit wardrobe of politicians around the world, but his wardrobe is a masterclass in uniform dressing. Moreover, he’s shown that he’s a man that knows what looks best on his body – and dresses accordingly.
