Hi Femme!: Can you talk a bit about how you define queer femme style and what makes it transgressive?
Lane: I don’t feel super feminine, but I know that’s the way I’m perceived by the world, even though once you get to know me, I’m such a tomboy. I’m most comfortable sitting “like a dude” and my voice is really low. I have major “guy voice.” It’s definitely hard when you don’t look like what we think a man looks like because then it’s assumed that clearly you must be very girlie. I might wear a really delicate lace dress, but I also love wearing men’s cologne. Or I might dress like the frontman of a ’60s rock band, but I’m wearing lipstick and a smoky eye. I don’t think androgyny should just be reserved for women who look like men, which it often is.
Hi Femme!: How would you describe your personal style?
Lane: It really depends on my mood. I love really romantic clothing, anything with velvet or lace or embroidery. I also love black jeans and band t-shirts and Chelsea boots. I love glitter and bright colors and pattern clashing. Sometimes I wear heart or star stickers on my face because I just like things that add some fun and color to life. I co-design all my stage costumes for when I play in my band It Was Romance and they’re all really futuristic, like Jem meets Karen O. I’ve always used fashion as way to transport myself, and hopefully other people.

Hi Femme!: Who are your fashion icon(s)?
Lane: Karen O, Bjork, Carrie Brownstein, Stevie Nicks. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic. Delia*s catalogs (I know it’s not a person, but it feels like one).

Hi Femme!: What item in your style arsenal can you not live without?
Lane: Right now, I’ve been wearing these blue velvet ankle boots pretty much every single day. Everything I wear has its roots in rock and roll, no matter what.
